GOAL:  Teach us the importance of taking the time every Sunday to strategically map out our week. We know that things that get scheduled get done. Going through your week without a week without a dialed in Game plan for the next 7 days is like trying to Win a Championship Game without having any sort of offensive or defensive Game plan. We want to be Relentless in focusing our time and energy on the things that can be controlled.


HOW TO THRIVE IN A V.U.C.A ENVIRONMENT

VUCA is a concept that originated with students at the U.S. Army War College to describe the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of the World after the Cold War. Because of the pandemic, I can say with certainty that we are now in a VUCA World.

So in this new World, how can we still get things done, keep improving, keep making money, while being present to our family members, kids, and teammates.

In this New VUCA World, what is one thing that you are doing well right now?

WHAT NOT TO DO IN A VUCA ENVIRONMENT

My teenagers years were Wild,  I got in a lot trouble, going to a lot of different high schools, and I spent a lot of time in a lot of different police cars.

The more turbulent my environment became, the more disorganized I became, and the worse my actions became.

Fortunately!

I learned something fundamental from those “Wild VUCA” years.

I learned that to succeed in an unpredictable environment, I needed to do the opposite of what I was doing during those years.

I learned that when the World goes V.U.C.A, I need to tighten up, button up, and get more organized than ever before.

I am pretty good at this now. You can ask my 2 sons KJ (11) and Maceo (9) because since this pandemic started, dad has been following them around like Nick Saban follows around a defensive back who gave up a touchdown catch.

What is one small thing you can do right now to get your life more organized?

WHAT THE BEST MILITARY OPERATIONS AND SPORTS PROGRAM KNOW

The reason “why” V.U.C.A. originated in the military is because War is the most volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous environment in the World.

Because of this, the Best military operations schedule the days of their soldiers down to the minute. They know that because War is such an uncertain environment, they need to double down on the things they can control. When not on the battlefield they can control how their soldiers are spending their time.

The popularity of sports has “Exploded” over the last 15 years. In part because in this World of Reality T.V. and Instagram photoshop sports are one of the few sources of entertainment left where the audience does not know what is going to happen next.

Of course, sports aren’t as dangerous as Battle but sports players and coaches do operate in a volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous environment.

The best coaches schedule practices and entire days down to the minute.

We can learn something from this…

I LEARNED FROM MY MISTAKES

So, I most definitely learned from my “Wild Out” years, and I have spent the last 13+ years studying and applying practices of the World’s best sports teams.

I have learned the importance of prioritizing organization, discipline, and a schedule in V.U.C.A times. One of the most potent strategies for me has been creating a Weekly Design System, a WDS.

I learned this a few years back from one of the World’s Top performance coaches, Robin Sharma.

Because so much has changed over the last few months, it is more important than ever to go all-in on my WDS, and I encourage you to do it as well. It is absolutely life-changing!

My WDS all starts each Sunday morning with a Blueprinting Session.

STEP #1 BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

My Blueprinting session starts with me in “corpse pose” in a relaxed state, envisioning what I want to see happen during the week.

Stephen Covey, in his book the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, has this as Habit #2. Begin with the end in mind. This means to begin my (WDS) with a clear vision of my desired direction and destination. For me, that includes things such as deep work, deliberate practice, deep parenting, and (P.Q.O.) prolific quality output when it comes to my business.

STEP #2 WEEKLY DESIGN SYSTEM (WDS) IMPLEMENTATION

I then take 60 minutes each Sunday morning to create my “Blueprint for a Limitless Week.” You might be able to do this in a shorter time frame.

This takes a full hour because I am also creating the “WDS” for my 2 sons.

I start my Process by writing a story in my Performance Journal about the 7 Days that I just lived. I then record lessons learned and optimizations for making the coming week even better.

Next, on a large piece of paper that has each day running from 3am to 9pm I write down all my commitments. I know, I know, 3am is super early, but my most productive hours of the day are between 3am, and 7am.

You, of course, can adjust your schedule to what works for you.

The key here is to list more than my Zoom business meetings, and work projects.

I set clear periods for my training, my sport skill development, my relaxation practices and my parenting.

I also create segments for my errands. I also take time to figure out what I really want to measure this week.

Measurement and Data tracking is a Big Piece in my Success Formula.

I highly recommend that you take the time today to “Blueprint.”

Doing this weekly will build Extraordinary Focus into your Days, build Massive Momentum and Amplify your Training and Skill Adaptation

Bonus Insight: A Powerful Insight when it comes to the “WDS” involves getting disciplined about how you *don’t* want to spend your time during the week. This means *not* thinking when you don’t have to, becoming disciplined about not paying attention to non-urgent tasks unless, or until, it’s truly essential that you do. Learning to say no to tasks and distractions that are not on your WDS is difficult but very helpful.

The Super Common “Non-Urgent” tasks right now? You know what they are Social media, News Checking, Netflix….

STEP #3 EXECUTE THE (WDS) WITH PRECISION AND FLEXIBILITY

Ok, now the (WDS) has been created I need to spend the next 7 days following through on the schedule. I do this with precision, and I do with flexibility. This means that I am relentless about executing the schedule when nothing out of the ordinary pops up. Of course, we are in a VUCA world so things will inevitably pop up and when they do I try my Best to become flexible and adapt.

Easier said than done, but who doesn’t love a good challenge

CONCLUSION

We know that things that get scheduled get done. Going through our week without a dialed-in Game plan for the next 7 days is like trying to Win a Championship Game without having any sort of offensive or defensive Game plan. We want to be Relentless in focusing our time and energy on the things that can be controlled.

My challenge to you?

Create a WDS for yourself this week, do the above 3 steps, and do them with precision and flexibility.
